JESUS CHOZAS, FLAMENCO SINGER

Jesus Matias Solano, better known as Jesus Choza, was born in Madrid in 1944. He started his career in 1959 at 14 years of age in Teatro Madrid as part of the company "Paso a la Juventud" promoted by the impresario Feijoo y Castilla. The production travelled the whole of Spain closing the tour in the historic Circo Price de Madrid.

From 1959 to 1962 Jesus worked among artists such as La Niña de Antequera, La Niña de la Puebla, Rafael Farina, Porrinas de Badajoz, Antonio Molina, Juanito Valderrama y Manolo el Malagueño. This environment provided the schooling of a lifetime for Jesus. He then went on to tour Europe working for Luisillo. Then there were performances with Angel Pericet, Jose Toledano and Marienma, participating in the festivals of Spain over an extended period. In 1968 he was contracted by Juanita Reina for a tour of Spain and later of Argentina. Upon his return he sang for Caracolillo in the best venues of Spain. Afterwards he focused his work on performances in the "tablaos" (flamenco venues) of Madrid: Arco de Cuchilleros, Las Cuevas de Nemesio and Patio de Reyes.

Later Sara Lezana (Los Tarantos) hired Jesus for their performance in Casino de Estoril, Portugal and on TVE (National Television of Spain). Juan Valderrama then picked up Chozas for his production, working with him up to 1971, the year he retired from flamenco.

In 1996 Jesus came back as a solo artist with the guitarist Rafael Andujar bringing airing once again his years of experience as an accomplished flamenco singer. In 1999 Jesus achieved three first prizes in the Festival Nacional Flamenco del Cante de las Minas in "La Union" in the categories of Cartegeneras, tarantas and levantica. Accompanied by Andujar.

Then in 2000 he grabbed two first prizes, one for "cantes libres" in the Festival de Linares and the other for "Cantes de Levante" in the Festival de Vendimia in Jumilla. In 2001 he was a finalist for "Serranas y Cañas" in the Festival Nacional de Cante de Cordoba.  That same year he also secured first prize at Cante Nacional de lo Ferro, Murcia. In 2002 Jesus was awarded the Sol de Oro, the highest award of the Festival Internacional de Cante Flamenco Ciudada del Sol (Lorca, Murcia). Then in 2004 he obtained both the Antonio Mairena and Cayetano Muriel awards.

Jesus Chozas recorded five singles between 1965 and 1970 and various CDs with the group CADENA, as well as having participated in various recordings of Rafael Andujar.

In recent years Jesus Chozas has been a regular collaborator with Duo Sonanta, offering performances in the Ateneo de Madrid, Sala Clamores and Sala Galileo in the Spanish capital.

Review:

"Jesus stands out among flamenco singers of Greater Madrid for his brilliant standard and for bringing together traditional singing styles with new nuances, always with perfect rhythm and without losing sight of authentic flamenco roots... We are speaking of a flamenco vocalist of great trajectory who is highly respected among aficionados" (J.A. Perez - Diario La Verdad)

"Jesus Chozas is one of these artists who manages to out do himself and he demonstrated it by becoming the grand protagonist of the night ... solea, seguiriyas, bulerias, martinete - quite an undertaking for any singer and all executed with great gusto and and with sufficient range to hold court with authority." (M. Navarro - Diario La Opinion)

"...he shows maturity as much in his voice as in his command of the stage, fitting of someone with such a long professional and personal trajectory." (J. Redondo - Diario El Mundo)
