JESUS CHOZAS - FLAMENCO SINGER

Jesus Matias Solano, better known as Jesus Choza, was born in Madrid in 1944. He started his career in 1959 at 14 years of age in Teatro Madrid as part of the company "Paso a la Juventud" promoted by the impresario Feijoo y Castilla. The production travelled the whole of Spain closing the tour in the historic Circo Price de Madrid.

From 1959 to 1962 Jesus worked among artists such as La Niña de Antequera, La Niña de la Puebla, Rafael Farina, Porrinas de Badajoz, Antonio Molina, Juanito Valderrama y Manolo el Malagueño. This environment provided the schooling of a lifetime for Jesus. He then went on to tour Europe working for Luisillo. Then there were performances with Angel Pericet, Jose Toledano and Marienma, participating in the festivals of Spain over an extended period. In 1968 he was contracted by Juanita Reina for a tour of Spain and later of Argentina. Upon his return he sang for Caracolillo in the best venues of Spain. Afterwards he focused his work on performances in the "tablaos" (flamenco venues) of Madrid: Arco de Cuchilleros, Las Cuevas de Nemesio and Patio de Reyes.

Later Sara Lezana (Los Tarantos) hired Jesus for their performance in Casino de Estoril, Portugal and on TVE (National Television of Spain). Juan Valderrama then picked up Chozas for his production, working with him up to 1971, the year he retired from flamenco.

In 1996 Jesus came back as a solo artist with the guitarist Rafael Andujar bringing airing once again his years of experience as an accomplished flamenco singer. In 1999 Jesus achieved three first prizes in the Festival Nacional Flamenco del Cante de las Minas in "La Union" in the categories of Cartegeneras, tarantas and levantica. Accompanied by Andujar.

Then in 2000 he grabbed two first prizes, one for "cantes libres" in the Festival de Linares and the other for "Cantes de Levante" in the Festival de Vendimia in Jumilla. In 2001 he was a finalist for "Serranas y Cañas" in the Festival Nacional de Cante de Cordoba.  That same year he also secured first prize at Cante Nacional de lo Ferro, Murcia. In 2002 Jesus was awarded the Sol de Oro, the highest award of the Festival Internacional de Cante Flamenco Ciudada del Sol (Lorca, Murcia). Then in 2004 he obtained both the Antonio Mairena and Cayetano Muriel awards.

Jesus Chozas recorded five singles between 1965 and 1970 and various CDs with the group CADENA, as well as having participated in various recordings of Rafael Andujar.

In recent years Jesus Chozas has been a regular collaborator with Duo Sonanta, offering performances in the Ateneo de Madrid, Sala Clamores and Sala Galileo in the Spanish capital.

Review:

"Jesus stands out among flamenco singers of Greater Madrid for his brilliant standard and for bringing together traditional singing styles with new nuances, always with perfect rhythm and without losing sight of authentic flamenco roots... We are speaking of a flamenco vocalist of great trajectory who is highly respected among aficionados" (J.A. Perez - Diario La Verdad)

"Jesus Chozas is one of these artists who manages to out do himself and he demonstrated it by becoming the grand protagonist of the night ... solea, seguiriyas, bulerias, martinete - quite an undertaking for any singer and all executed with great gusto and and with sufficient range to hold court with authority." (M. Navarro - Diario La Opinion)

"...he shows maturity as much in his voice as in his command of the stage, fitting of someone with such a long professional and personal trajectory." (J. Redondo - Diario El Mundo)

ROBBIE K. JONES - PERCUSSIONIST

Robbie was born in 1975 in Vermilion, Ohio. Having studied music in general from seven years of age he began to formalize his studies of percussion at Fort Lewis College, Durango Colorado under master percussionist John Pennington. During this time (1994 -1996) he expanded on his conservatory education by studying the djembe under Bruce Rudolph, student and collaborator of Guinean Master Drummer Mamady Keita.

From 1996 to 1998 Robbie finished his conservatory studies in the Conservatory of Baldwin-Wallace University under the tutelage of Professor George Kitely. It was at this time that Robbie discovered the cajon and its peruvian roots, through a masterclass with Latin percussionist and Grammy nominee Ruben Alvarez (John Mayall, Arturo Sandoval, Ramsey Lewis). At the same time Robbie was studying Spanish language and completed his degree of Liberal Arts in Intercultural Communication in 1998 (BWU).

At that point Robbie became interested in the cajon as used in flamenco and in 1999 he moved to Spain. There in Madrid he attended courses at Amor de Dios, primarily learning from dance teachers Cristobal Reyes, Antonio Granados, Eli "La Truco" and singer Talegon de Cordoba. As flamenco cajon instruction was not yet consolidated, Robbie used these classes he studied these courses to unlock the secrets of flamenco through its dance rhythms and the guitarists that accompanied every class.

While discovering flamenco, Robbie also delved into other forms of music. This was how he developed a unique style for the cajon. He has played with the world music group Finis Terrae since 2000 and played for four years with the Spanish folk group Balbarda. In 2005 he began playing with Irish singer Garrett Wall, a collaboration that lead to the Formation of Garret Wall band (later Track Dogs) in 2006.

In 2006 Robbie took a sabbatical from Spain to record with the band Jones Street Station - a semi-acoustic lineup that was heavily influenced by, bluegrass, The Band and fit into to the Americana Music genre.

Upon returning to Madrid his main focus was Track Dogs (then known as Garrett Wall Band) and playing for other groups such as La Banda Del Soplo, where he developed skills as frontman which he juggled with drum set duties.

This return to Madrid is also when for four years Robbie formed part of the host band for regular jazz manouche jam sessions at ContraClub in Madrid.

Around 2007 Robbie started working as an actor for children's theatre and for voiceover work, dubbing as well as acting on stage. This work lead to composing or performing for advertisements for companies such as Coca Cola, Dacia, and Modalia.com.

Currently he performs with various projects. Funky Topo Trio lends a live soundtrack to vintage cartoons of Czeckoslovakia. Familia Scalofrini, in which Robbie is the lead singer, sets the tone of Halloween with a theatrical concert for children. Folk On Crest focuses on maintaining and developing the traditional music of Salamanca, "musica charra." La Fantastica Banda is a project which presents music of the Beatles to children from Teatros del Canal to Teatro Lara to Circo Price. The Potato Monsters straddles the Atlantic with a mixture of American folk and Celtic music and was chosen to prepare original and traditional music for the opening of "the Illusion of the Far West" exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museun in Madrid. Track Dogs is a group comprised of two Irish, one Brit and Robbie as the American in the band. Their original compositions focus on the ballads of Garrett Wall,  Americana music, and up beat tunes with grooves that reflect the influence of the band's time living in Spain.

Apart from these projects, Robbie's own creation has been the longest running session of bluegrass and country in Spain's capital. The Americana Music Jam Madrid, which Robbie leads with a banjo and his voice, is a weekly outlet for fans of American folk music that has been running since 2010.

Robbie is also a regular collaborator of the flamenco project, Duo Sonanta, having participated in the quartet lineup with Jesus Chozas and several performances as a trio. Robbie K. Jones is the producer of the studio recordings of Duo Sonanta.

All these projects have lead Robbie to perform in over 45 provinces of Spain , the U.S. and several parts of Europe, particularly Ireland and the U.K. His discography includes nearly twenty albums.
